Cost and quotes
How do I get a quote?
Ring 01622 239046 or fill in the form with your postcode and the rooms you have in mind. We phone you back and, if it looks workable, arrange a survey.
How much does air conditioning cost to install?
Checkatrade's May 2026 national guide puts a single wall-mounted system at about £1,900 to £2,240 for the unit and labour, plus £400 to £700 for electrical work. See what air conditioning costs.
How much does air conditioning cost to run?
Checkatrade gives about 20p to 60p an hour, depending on the system, its age and the insulation. At the October to December 2026 price cap, electricity costs 26.32p per kWh. See the sums.
How do I check an installer's F-gas certificate?
Ask for the company certificate number and the body that issued it, such as Refcom, F-Gas Register or Bureau Veritas, then check it with that body. See F-gas rules.
Heating with air conditioning
Can air conditioning heat a room?
Most modern split systems can. They work as air-to-air heat pumps in winter. See can air conditioning heat your home.
Is it cheaper than an electric heater?
Much cheaper to run. With a seasonal efficiency of 4, each unit of heat costs about a quarter of what a direct electric heater costs.
Does it make hot water?
Not in almost all cases. Keep your boiler, immersion or cylinder for that.
Installation
What size do I need?
Roughly 2 to 2.5kW for 15 to 25 square metres, before you allow for sun, glass and ceiling height. See what size you need.
Does it need a new electrical circuit?
Usually. In England a new circuit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so it must be certified.
Can I cool several rooms from one outdoor unit?
Yes. That is a multi-split system, and it suits terraced houses where there is space for only one outdoor unit.
Can you fit air conditioning in a flat?
Often, with the freeholder's written consent. The planning rules allow one outdoor unit of up to 0.6 cubic metres on a block of flats, and there are other conditions.
Should I choose portable or fixed?
Portable for a short-term or rented room, fixed if you want to stay cool and quiet for years. See portable or fixed.
Planning and the rules
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?
Often not, for a reversible unit on a house that meets the permitted development conditions. See our planning guide.
What about conservation areas?
The unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, or sit nearer the road than the building. Maidstone has 41 conservation areas.
How loud can the outdoor unit be?
To use permitted development rights, the limit is 37 dB(A) one metre outside the nearest neighbouring door or window to a habitable room.
Is there a maximum temperature for a workplace?
No. The law asks for a reasonable temperature indoors, and employers must assess the risks from heat. See office air conditioning.
What is a TM44 inspection?
An energy inspection required at least every five years where a building's air conditioning adds up to more than 12kW.
Servicing and repairs
How often does air conditioning need servicing?
Follow the maker's handbook. Most home systems should have a yearly service, and busy or dusty sites may need more. See servicing.
Why is water dripping from my indoor unit?
Usually a blocked drain. Switch the unit off and put something under the drip. See repairs.
Do I need to re-gas my air conditioning every year?
No. It is a sealed system, so if the refrigerant is low there is a leak to find and fix.
Can you work on a system another company fitted?
Yes. Tell us the make and model when you ring.
