Multi-split air conditioning in Maidstone
We fit multi-split air conditioning in houses and small offices in Maidstone and across mid Kent. A single outdoor unit serves several indoor units, so each room has its own temperature and you avoid a row of boxes on the outside wall. It suits bedrooms across a top floor, or a whole house.

How a multi-split system works
Each indoor unit has its own pair of refrigerant pipes running back to one outdoor unit. An Energy Saving Trust webinar describes systems of up to 12kW feeding up to five indoor units, and larger ranges exist. Each room has its own controller, and rooms you are not using can stay off.
When a multi-split makes more sense than separate units
The usual reason is the outside wall. Several single systems mean several outdoor units, and on a terrace or a narrow side return there may be room for only one. It matters for planning as well. Under the permitted development rules, a house that is not detached can have only one outdoor unit and a detached house only two, so a multi-split may be the only way to serve several rooms without a planning application.
Separate single systems have their own advantages. If one fails, the other rooms keep running, and each can be replaced on its own. If you only ever need two rooms that are far apart, two singles may be simpler. We price both when it is a close call.
Planning the pipe routes
The hard part of a multi-split is getting pipes from each room back to one place. Loft spaces help on a top floor, and pipes can often drop down inside a cupboard or in neat trunking outside. Every model has limits on pipe length and on the height between units, so the survey starts with where the outdoor unit can go and works back from there. Rooms on different floors are possible, but the routes need more thought.
What changes the price
The outdoor unit is sized for the rooms it serves, and each extra room adds an indoor unit, a pipe run and a controller. The route matters most: pipes that run through a loft cost less than pipes that have to be boxed in across several floors. Tell us which rooms you would use at the same time, because that affects the size of the outdoor unit. Our guide to what size you need covers each room.
Common questions
Can some rooms heat while others cool?
Not on a standard multi-split. All indoor units run in the same mode at the same time. Systems that can do both at once are a larger, commercial type.
What happens if the outdoor unit fails?
Every room served by it stops until it is fixed. That is the trade-off against separate single systems.
Can I start with two rooms and add more later?
Often, if the outdoor unit is sized for it and has spare connections. Tell us at the survey, as it is far cheaper to plan for now than to change later.
Does a larger system need leak checks?
If it holds 5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent or more, about 7.4kg of R32, it must be leak-checked at least once a year. Most home systems hold far less. See F-gas rules.
