Server room cooling in Maidstone
We fit server room and comms room cooling for businesses in Maidstone, Kings Hill and across mid Kent. Computer equipment turns nearly all the power it uses into heat, and a small closed room can overheat fast. A correctly sized system holds the room steady, day and night, summer and winter, so your IT keeps running.

How much cooling a server room needs
Start with the electrical load. Power drawn by IT equipment becomes heat, so a 900W server gives off about 900W of heat, and the cooling has to remove all of it. Add every server, switch, router and storage unit, then lighting, people and any sun through a window, and leave a margin for growth. If you can read the load from your UPS, that is the most useful number you can give us.
What temperature to aim for
The ASHRAE guideline widely used for computer rooms recommends 18°C to 27°C at the air intake of the rack, and UPS batteries generally prefer the lower end. Colder is not better, because cooling a room to 18°C when the kit is happy at 24°C uses more energy for no gain. Measure at the front of the rack rather than at the wall controller, since the two can differ by several degrees.
Why an ordinary office unit may not be enough
Split units are common in smaller rooms, but this job differs from cooling an office in three ways. It runs all day every day, so it wears faster and needs regular servicing. It has to cool in January as well as July, and not every model cools reliably when it is very cold outside. It also has no one watching it, so a failure on a Friday night can go unnoticed until Monday. Ask about the unit's low outdoor temperature limit, and fit a separate temperature alarm whichever system you choose.
Back-up and redundancy
If an outage would stop your business, consider a second unit that takes over when the first fails, or at least a plan for the first few hours. A pair of units can run in turn, which shares the wear and means a service does not leave the room uncovered. A portable unit is a poor long-term answer. It needs its exhaust taken out through a door or window, which seals badly, and its water emptied.
Common questions
How quickly does a server room overheat?
It depends on the load and the size of the room, but a small closed room with several kilowatts of IT can warm up quickly once the cooling stops. A temperature alarm gives you warning.
Can you work without shutting anything down?
Installing cooling does not normally require a shutdown of your IT, but a new electrical circuit may involve a short power cut to part of the building. We agree the timing with you first.
Does it count towards the 12kW inspection rule?
Possibly. The rule covers systems providing cooling for people's comfort. A unit used only for equipment may fall outside it, so ask your energy assessor.
